One of the biggest concerns of clients who contact us is the fear of not fulfilling their tax obligations in Portugal on time. After all, no one likes to be fined!
If you have trusted this matter to a certified accountant in Portugal, then you probably won’t have to worry about this. However, if you’d like to receive information directly from the Portuguese tax authority because you’re doing this on your own or like to receive that added peace of mind, you can easily activate notifications on the AT website and at no cost to you.
This service will automatically send you email alerts about payment deadlines for things such as car stamp duty, municipal property tax or dates for submitting income tax returns in Portugal. You will also receive notifications if there is any tax-related situation that requires your attention.
How do you activate alerts on the Portuguese tax website? It's simple:
Step 1 - Log in to the AT Portal:
Open the webpage https://www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/at/html/index.html and click on the “Iniciar Sessão” (login) button.
The site is only available in Portuguese, so it’s advisable to ask for help if you have difficulties with the language:
You can login with one of the following methods:
Using your NIF (Portuguese tax identification number) and password;
the Chave Móvel Digital (mobile digital key, if you have one);
or your Portuguese Citizen Card (this option requires you to have the Authentication.Gov plugin installed).
Step 2 - Activate the notifications in the portal:
In the portal, go to the page “A minha Área” (my area):
Then, in the Menu, click on “Notificações e Citações” (notifications and citations) and then “Gerir Canais” (manage channels):
On the “Canais de Notificação” (notification channels) table at the top of the page, choose "Portal das Finanças" > "Ativar":
It is also possible to activate notifications sent by ViaCTT. In this case, choose "Via CTT" > "Ativar". Because these notifications are sent via CTT, in addition to subscribing to the service on the AT Portal, it is also necessary for taxpayers to have an active electronic mailbox on ViaCTT. Therefore, this service is only available if you subscribe to a free electronic mailbox ViaCTT (the AT portal will link you to this service when you click “Ativar”).
After activating the electronic notifications, these will become effective on the 1st day of the following month, as long as a minimum period of 10 days has passed from the date of activation. Otherwise, notifications will only become effective on the 1st day of the 2nd following month.
